Asphalt Paving Tonnage Calculator

Calculate total tons of hot mix asphalt, cubic yards, and material cost estimates for driveways, roadways, and parking areas based on compacted depth and area dimensions.

Project Measurements

Residential driveways typically use 2.5 to 3 inches compacted.
US average hot mix material cost ranges from $85 to $130 per ton.

How to Calculate Asphalt for Any Paving Project

Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), often called blacktop or bituminous asphalt, is sold by weight (short tons = 2,000 lbs) rather than liquid volume. Because paving equipment compacts the material during roll-out, calculators must factor in the compacted density of dense-graded asphalt pavement, which averages 145 pounds per cubic foot (2.025 tons per cubic yard).

The Mathematical Asphalt Tonnage Formula

To calculate the exact tonnage required for any rectangular area:

Tons = [ Length(ft) × Width(ft) × (Thickness(in) / 12) ] × 145 ÷ 2,000

Or alternatively using cubic yards:

Cubic Yards = [ Square Footage × (Thickness(in) / 12) ] ÷ 27
Asphalt Tons = Cubic Yards × 2.025

Recommended Asphalt Thickness by Application

Application Type Compacted Thickness Gravel Sub-Base (Aggregate) Typical Lifespan
Resurfacing / Overlay 1.5 – 2.0 inches Existing stable asphalt or concrete 10 – 15 years
Residential Driveway (Standard) 2.5 – 3.0 inches 6 – 8 inches crushed stone (CA-6) 20 – 25 years
Heavy-Duty Driveway (RV / Boat) 3.5 – 4.0 inches 8 – 10 inches compacted aggregate 25+ years
Commercial Parking Lot 4.0 – 5.0 inches 8 – 12 inches dense base aggregate 20 – 30 years

Asphalt Cost Breakdown (2026 Market Benchmarks)

A full asphalt installation includes site excavation, sub-base installation, asphalt delivery, machine laydown, and vibratory rolling. In the United States, homeowners typically pay:

  • Material Only: $85 to $130 per ton delivered from local asphalt batch plants.
  • Turnkey Installed: $3.50 to $7.00 per square foot for a standard 3-inch residential driveway.
  • Gravel Sub-Base Preparation: $1.50 to $2.75 per square foot including grading and compaction.

Frequently Asked Questions About Asphalt Paving

How many tons of asphalt do I need for a 2-car driveway?
A standard two-car driveway measuring 20 feet wide by 40 feet long (800 sq ft) paved to a 3-inch compacted thickness requires approximately 16.2 tons of asphalt. Including a 5% buffer for grade variations, ordering 17 tons is recommended.
What is the difference between loose and compacted asphalt?
When asphalt is spread out by the paving machine, it is loose. Rolling with heavy vibratory rollers compacts the asphalt by approximately 20% to 25%. If you specify a 3-inch compacted final depth, the contractor must lay down nearly 3.75 inches of loose mix.
How soon after paving should you sealcoat asphalt?
Do not sealcoat new asphalt immediately. New asphalt requires 6 to 12 months for the petroleum oils to oxidize and evaporate so the surface hardens. Apply your first sealcoat 9 to 12 months after installation, and re-apply every 2 to 3 years thereafter.
Is asphalt cheaper than concrete?
Yes. Asphalt generally costs 40% to 50% less upfront than concrete. A typical asphalt driveway costs $3.50 to $7.00 per square foot, while a concrete driveway averages $8.00 to $16.00 per square foot. However, asphalt requires periodic sealcoating and has a slightly shorter lifespan in hot southern climates.
